In the Community

Many groups within the community, including those that may at first glance appear adversarial, can serve as allies and partners in prevention efforts, in particular:

Bar/Restaurant Owner Association
As community members with responsibilities and direct influence on alcohol availability and marketing and promotion, bar and restaurant owners are a critical part of prevention efforts.

Law Enforcement Officials
Working with local police helps ensure consistency and stringency of policy enforcement efforts within the campus and community and integrates an important community voice into prevention planning and implementation.

Medical Professionals/ AOD Treatment Providers
Medical professionals see firsthand the tragic effects of alcohol and other drug use among college students and can provide an important health perspective on the need for and impact of prevention efforts.

Neighborhood Councils
Community members are often adversely affected by behavior associated with high-risk drinking and can become an important grassroots advocacy voice for campus-community coalition efforts.
